Summary of Release 5.3 Beta with Nuance 8.0


The VoiceGenie VoiceXML platform v5.3 Beta uses Nuance Speech Recognition System 8.0 to provide improved performance and a variety of new features. Please refer to the lists below to determine which new features will be supported on the VoiceGenie platform, and how to get started using them.

Supported Nuance 8.0 Features

  • XML grammars are supported (based on W3C XML grammar format from August 20, 2001)

  • New features for GSL grammars:
    • New grammar access modes include http:, local:, special: and fail:
    • Platform owners can use new file:, dgdb:, and static: grammar access modes
    • Rules can be explicitly declared public using the :public keyword

  • External rules (in dynamic grammars) can be referenced from within grammars
  • Dynamic grammars can be stored in a file system or web server
  • Platform owners can store dynamic grammars in a database
  • External rules can be dynamically redefined
  • A grammar backoff can be specified in case an external reference fails
  • Platform owners can use just-in-time grammars


  • Natural language specification can include new $return variable
  • Natural language specification can include new assign command


  • Platform owners can precompile their grammars into Nuance Grammar Objects (binary files with .ngo extension) for faster runtime loading


  • Platform owners can make use of the AccuBurstTM technology, for dynamic accuracy optimization


  • Multiple languages are supported

  1. Use the updated Grammar Wizard to create basic Nuance 8.0 XML grammars.

  3. Use the new Nuance 8 Forum to discuss Nuance 8.0 and the updated Developer Platform (using Nuance 8.0).
